Enough Said (2013)

I recently had the privilege and pleasure of watching James Gandolfini’s final film Enough Said. Written and directed by Nicole Holofcener and starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Catherine Keener, Toni Collette, Ben Falcone and of course the late great James Gandolfini. This film centers on the character of Eva (played by Louis-Dreyfus), who is a divorced massage therapist and soon-to-be empty nester. She attends a party with some friends and meets Albert (played by Gandolfini), who asks her out and they begin an absolutely adorable romance. At the same party she meets Marianne (played by Keener), who is a hip, somewhat opinionated poetry author (snob) who is in bad need of a new masseuse, so Eva takes her on as a client. The more she meets with Alberta and the more she meets with Marianne, the more Eva realizes something she didn’t quite expect; Albert and Marianne were once married, are now divorced and Eva has absolutely no idea what to do. Should she be honest with both Albert and Marianne? Of course not! Then she wouldn’t be able to hear about all her new boyfriend’s terrible traits from his ex-wife and we wouldn’t have a movie. The deeper each of the relationships progress, the more unwilling Eva is to admit what she knows and the comedy of errors ensues from there. If you are in the mood for something that will genuinely make you laugh out loud then this is the film for you.

I will say this though, I had a hard time with this one folks. Not because I didn’t thoroughly enjoy it (which I did), but because the whole time I was laughing and falling in love with the characters, I was mourning the loss of Gandolfini. I have loved so many of his characters and so many of his movies and if this is the note he was going to go out on, it was a good one. You will be missed Mr. Gandolfini, you will be missed.
